“We will complete the process of granting citizenship soon. Any problems or complications that remain in the process will be resolved and every eligible person will receive citizenship,” Shah said speaking on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Monday at Milan Mela Ground in Kolkata.

“He gave his life for the cause. When the Nehru-Liaquat agreement came, Syama Prasad Mookerjee protested and said that the concerns of Hindus were not addressed. The concerns of Muslims in the country were addressed, but the issues of Hindus in Pakistan were ignored. That is why he resigned,” Shah said.
“Now we have introduced CAA. We have done the work of granting citizenship to Hindus and we will complete the process for all those who are eligible. Syama Prasad Mookerjee had envisioned protection and dignity for displaced Hindus and we are fulfilling that vision,” he added.
Referring to Mookerjee’s stand on national unity, the Union Home Minister said, “Syama Prasad Mookerjee had said that one nation cannot have two national flags, two rules and two leaders (do Nisan, do Bidhan and do Pradhan). Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled that resolve by abrogating Article 370.”
Shah gave a strong political message saying that time has come to punish all those who have indulged in corruption and cheated the people.
“I had told before the election that none will be spared and now time has come. The government has passed bills and all the culprits who have cheated people will be made to pay back – so stay prepared. They will be brought to task,” he said.
Shah praised the newly formed government in West Bengal led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and highlighted a series of steps taken within a short period after the political change in the state.
He said that schemes such as Annapurna Yojana, Ayushman Bharat and Lakhpati Didi had already been introduced in the state. He also mentioned that construction of a cancer hospital in North Bengal had started and work relating to land allocation for border security forces had been completed.
The Home Minister said steps had also begun to identify and deport illegal infiltrators. He added that the state government had acted swiftly in allowing investigations into corruption cases.
The programme witnessed the BJP leadership projecting Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s legacy as a key ideological foundation while using the occasion to underline issues of citizenship, governance and political change in West Bengal.
